Professor Nicoli Nattrass writes that little is known about Sambar deer on Table Mountain. Published expert assessments view the ecological impact of this large Oriental deer as likely negligible, yet SANParks officials engage in ad hoc and seemingly unprocedural ‘culling’ operations simply because it is exotic/alien. The attached discussion paper reviews the evidence about Sambar and the relevant South African legislative framework. It calls for responses and for more research on the impact and ecological niche of Sambar deer on Table Mountain and for a moratorium on hunting/culling operations until such time as the evidence indicates that it is necessary and the required protocols are in place.
